In over 100 countries, we offer the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of in vitro diagnostic tests, combined with clinical decision support solutions, consulting, digital diagnostics, disease management, laboratory automation and software, to provide integrated solutions to laboratories, clinicians and healthcare systems.

From the very beginning, improving patients’ lives has been at the core of our business. Vitamin C deficiency was a major health problem until 1933, when scientists learnt how to produce it. Within a year, we created the first test to accurately measure vitamin C levels in the body. Thanks to this test, doctors were able to clearly identify which patients needed to take supplements of this vitamin so essential to our health.

The advent of computers and digital recording in the 1950s sparked the digital revolution. We soon realised that this also heralded the dawn of a new era in laboratory medicine. In the 1960s, we acquired the electronic research unit of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), the diagnostic unit of Chemische Fabrik Schweizerhalle and the instrument manufacturer Tegimenta. Together they became the pillars of our rapidly evolving laboratory technology.

Less than ten years later, we launched the world’s first automated laboratory diagnostic instrument: cobas® Bio, an innovative centrifugal analyser for clinical chemistry. The cobas family gave birth to the multi-channel analyser, the first instrument that allows users to perform multiple tests in parallel – a revolution in diagnostics. Since its launch, cobas has become the industry standard for quality and performance. We continue to bring new and innovative solutions to the market.
